  • Salinas is located in the U.S. state of California, about 20 minutes from the coast and outside the southern side of the Greater Bay Area. 
  • It is about 10 miles east-southwest of the inlet of the Salinas River.
  • It is the county seat of Monterey County.
  • It is Monterey County’s largest municipality.
  • It is 1.5 hours south of San Francisco, 1 hour south of San Jose and 25 minutes from Monterey (northeast).
  • The elevation of the city is 16meters or 52 feet above sea level. 
  • The ethnic composition of Salinas include White-45.8%, African American-2.0%, Native American-1.3%, Asian-6.3%, Pacific Islander-0.3%, from other races-39.2%, and two or more races-5.1%.

  • Before 200 AD, the land on which Salinas is situated was occupied by Native Americans called as the Esselen.
  • Between 200 and 500 AD, Ohlone speaking people known as “Rumsen” settled in the area.
  • In 1854, the Salinas post office was established.
  • In 1867, the streets of Salinas were formed.
  • In 1872, it became the seat of Monterey County.
  • In 1874, it was incorporated as a town.
  • Salinas got its name from the word “Salt marsh”.
  • The agricultural industry of the city started to grow in the mid-1800s.

  • The city had the highest per capital income in the US in 1924.

  • The city is home to John Steinbeck, a Nobel Prize laureate. 
  • More than thirty percent of the lettuce is grown here.
  • The Oldtown Salinas is home to Victorian architecture structures- the Steinbeck house, the John Steinbeck Library and the National Steinbeck Center. 
  • The city is included in the list of “Top 10 Cities for Cleanest Air Quality in the United States”.
  • The city has several public murals all around the city, including John Cerney works.
